This year Justin Walter (longtime Nomo member) released his magnificent debut LP “Lullabies and Nightmares” on the world-renowned Chicago-based independent label Kranky. The following is how Justin Walter describes the album:
“I set out to record an album of completely improvised music that fused my experiments with the Electronic Valve Instrument and my love of held sounds on the trumpet. In recent years I’ve come to see the trumpet as an instrument that speaks in slow and long sounds, with meaning coming from the shape and inflection of each note. The process for this was fairly straight forward, record lots of improvisations. Of the songs on the album, most are one take improvisations with the only overdubs being drums.”
The resulting album is one of the most remarkable albums released this year. Presented here by Justin Walter is a selection of music that has influenced him: “A few pale ales later and here are some things that have inspired me.”

Lee Noble is an L.A based multi-instrumentalist and songwriter. Earlier this year saw the release of his new album, ‘Ruiner’ on the ever-dependable Bathetic Records and is undeniably one of the hidden gems of 2013. The eerie atmosphere of the lo-fi folk haze of ambient swirls and Noble’s drifting vocals immerses the listener into an otherworldly dimension. The songs serve as one organic whole, where a gorgeous ebb and flow of enchanting sounds beautifully heightens all that surrounds you.
Lee Noble describing his mix: “It’s sort of a weird mix, but all tracks I can’t stop listening to. Going from lots of analog synth music to some slightly psychedelic folk/lo-fi, then a couple epic moments before a Pere Ubu denouement. It’s a pretty random list, some non-sequiturs in there but all stuff I love.”
Lee Noble also runs the No Kings record label, based in Echo Park, Los Angeles.

14 Untitled 2 “Manhunter” – James Rushford and Joe Talia
15 Corpse – Live Skull
16 Humor Me – Pere Ubu

Track-by-track Guide:

01 Main Title from “Zombi 2” – Fabio Frizzi
Italian horror soundtrack music at it’s finest. I just recently got into this score, which has lots of warm synths and stoic drum machines like this track and will also go into passages of kind of like Haitian drumming. A good mix!

02 Cherish – Ike Yard
Keeping things synthy and getting really stark. Ike Yard has some amazing tracks, I like this one for that sheet of guitar noise that comes in.

03 Toho Picture – Xeno & Oaklander
All analog all the time. I love the chord progression on this song, one of the few X&O tracks with none of their distinctive vocals. Thinking of lots of movie soundtracks on this mix, and the title fits, could be the rejected opening credits soundtrack to Toho Studios’ Inframan or some Godzilla flick.

04 Westbound – Pretty How Town
A guy in San Diego posted this on a modular synth forum as a demo of some of the patching techniques he was using. All modular with no midi and no sequencer. Magic! Really nice melody.

05 Winona – Drop Nineteens
Never mind any of the above, must remember 90s shoe-gazy guitar bands, like Drop Nineteens, who you may recognize for their amazing song “Delaware” which was featured on the Nickelodeon show Pete and Pete. This song is about Winona Rider.

06 Got to Be Certain – Kylie Minogue
I love old Kylie Minogue. This is from her first album, which is super synthy.

07 Secret Speech – Horsehair Everywhere
Switching gears here, I thought it would be funny to follow Kylie with this. This is an improv group I’m in with friends from Tennessee. We just have parties and record unconscious freak-out music. This was on an LP that was released by La Station Radar in France.

08 Washing – Sparkling Wide Pressure
My friend Frank Baugh’s (also in Horsehair Everywhere) long time solo project. Every track is great. This one’s from a tape called “I Think I Feel Clear Now” released by Maggot Valley in 2009.

09 For Kate I Wait – Ariel Pink’s Haunted Graffiti
Even more psych lo-fi. From “The Doldrums” I get this song stuck in my head a lot. It also has a great music video of Ariel in a sequined shirt talking on the phone.

10 Wand in the Beak of the Yellow Bird #3 – Kane Pour
Track from tape of the same name. I don’t know who this guy is or what’s going on besides he used to put tapes out on Housecraft and Rotifer, two of the best labels. Beautiful, damaged music.

11 Franny – Félicia Atkinson
Sparse, beautiful, haunting… a perfect song.

12 Making of Cyborg from “Ghost in the Shell” – Kenji Kawai
Bookends with the last track, keeping it sparse and then adding the whole choir. I love those bells. From the opening credits of the classic(?) anime. I guess I really like opening credits music.

13 Sentionauts from “Beyond the Black Rainbow” – Jeremy Schmidt
From the recent movie, which was somewhat coma-inducing. Score is ace though, and this organ riff is huge!

14 Untitled 2 “Manhunter” – James Rushford and Joe Talia
My friend Gher from Turin played this album for me when I was on tour. It came out on Graham Lambkin’s KYE label this year. Two side-long tracks culminate in this segment. It’s so slow and heavy.

15 Corpse – Live Skull
I put this on just about every mix I’ve ever made. So cool. It’s from the first issue of Tellus cassette magazine in 1983, before Thalia Zedek joined the band. This is what a band should sound like.

16 Humor Me – Pere Ubu
Such a memorable song. Dave Thomas is making crazy choices. It’s a joke!

Mixtape: Drunk Fall Mix 2013 (A Mixtape By Kyle Bobby Dunn)

To listen on Soundcloud:

Compiled by the internationally acclaimed Canadian composer Kyle Bobby Dunn, “Drunk Fall” features songs by close friends such as Thomas Meluch (Benoît Pioulard), Kyle’s brother Danny (“Black Bones”), and influences both old (Fleetwood Mac, Jeff Alexander) and new (Grouper, Tim Hecker). The mix culminates in an excerpt of the stunning unreleased Kyle Bobby Dunn track “Duckfaced Fantasy.” Over the last decade Kyle Bobby Dunn has been amassing an impressive body of work and his distinctive minimalist music has been released on such independent labels as Desire Path Recordings and UK-based independent label Low Point. Kyle Bobby Dunn’s double album “Bring Me the Head of Kyle Bobby Dunn” (Low Point) and “In Miserum Stercus” (a 12″ on Komino) were both released last year. This Autumn Low Point will reissue “Fragments & Compositions of Kyle Bobby Dunn” on 12″ vinyl.

Fractured Air Drunk Fall Mix 2013 by Kyle Bobby Dunn.

So I got very drunk on a bad bottle of wine like any old night in my life and compiled a series of autumn songs that are by some beautiful people in the world and some that I am utterly in love with until death do me part.

Tracks:

R.P. McMurphy – If that’s what being crazy is (excerpt)

————

Josh Barsky feat. Quinn Morris – Sherrif’s Badge
From my best buddy’s Second Remasters digital album that came out at a perfect time last year and features his beautiful girlfriends reverb’d out backing vocals. This song is super powerful to me and I think is one of the most underrated best songs ever written. Listen to the sheer power, look up at a raining sky and let that laughter become tears or vice versa.

————

Jeff Alexander – Come Wander with Me (Covered by Em)
Absolute beauty does exist. I don’t care what anyone says. Seeing it and experiencing at least once in life is such a gift and I cherish it. This song is written by some guy I don’t know but recorded and performed by the most beautiful woman I’ve ever met and who has the most perfect voice in the world. Perfect everything actually, no wonder my imperfections are no match for her.

————

Benoît Pioulard – Sous la plage
Tom’s music gets better with every new lovely album he releases but this song from his first album, Précis, gets me every time and I’m reminded of the intense impact of my life the year it was released and the years that have followed since.

————

Fleetwood Mac – Secondhand News
I started to listen to Fleetwood Mac a while ago and I know it’s silly of me but this such a great track. There is a kind of unspoken intensity hiding in all their elements and this song has become a favorite recently.

————

Grouper – Towers (excerpt)
I got to play in a beautiful space with this beautiful woman over the summer and her music has haunted me and lulled me for years. When I first heard this song in February earlier this year it matched how high and low my spirits were and how those two are basically the same anyway I seem to shake it. Long live Liz and long live love.

————

Alcrete – Live at Tone Deaf 2012 Kingston (excerpt)
Eamon Quinn and I met at this utterly perfect concert showcase last fall and I immediately fell in love. Now we are good buds and play funny songs and work together at a funny job all day. This tune goes on longer as well but it shows Eamon’s awesome guitar dynamics and he doesn’t need to plug into a computer to do it. Dude is rad.

————

Red House Painters – Trailways
I remember traveling down a dark highway with this one a few years ago, well many years now, and needing to pull over in the pitch black because the tears would not stop and I was sure to drive permanently into the dark if I didn’t stop. Maybe that was what Kozelek was going for in this gorgeous song because I still cry every time.

————

Francis Lai – Slow du Marriage
A sad soundtrack number from Francis Lai for when you’re alone and you know it. I listen to this soundtrack over and over again and sit alone at the bar drinking Macallan.

————

Francois De Roubaix – La mer est grande
Thought I’d drunkenly throw this in as well…. I don’t know.

————

Monogrenade – Immobile (acoustique)
Some acoustic version of this Francophone pop group in Montreal. I think it means that love basically renders us immobile.

————

J.S. Bach – Cello Prelude for acoustic guitar
Just to keep the decidedly drunken acoustic thing going but it’s the beautiful Bach prelude from his cello suites so you can’t blame me too much.

————

Danny Dunn – Black Bones (excerpt)
My brother sent me this a while back. He and I both use loops to build our music but he really wants people dance more than I do, so maybe see if you can? Or just dance with your drink like I usually do.

————

Josh Barsky – Horizon Line
If you still feel like dancing, another great Barsky track for you. This is one of his best as well and shows his talent for programming and elegant song writing. To me, Josh is recording in outer space and his tracks are like him spilling whisky down on us from outer space. Thanks Josh, seriously.

————

Tim Hecker – Stab Variation (excerpt)
I really haven’t liked a Tim Hecker release as much as his first one, Haunt Me, which is still so great to listen to any old fall day as there are many autumn memories on that one. This is a new song of his and makes me want to do my drunk dance in the street or the rain but I wish nobody was around to see it because it always seems nobody is around anyway.

————

Kyle Bobby Dunn – Duckfaced Fantasy (unreleased excerpt)
Yes a new song. Many new ones are in the works and I actually love everything I’ve been working which is a big change, and here’s a small bit that should remind you that love is like a thought you can hold on to and I think that what we hold in our minds we love the most and I feel so lucky to be able to hold thoughts and memories, for as drunk as I get.
