May’s mixtape features selections from a pair of the year’s most essential compilations: Alice Coltrane’s “Turiyasangitananda” (Luaka Bop) and Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds’ retrospective set “Lovely Creatures” (Mute).

“Lovely Creatures: The Best of Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds 1984-2014” comprises a gorgeous meticulously assembled archive – spanning music, previously unseen photographs, memorabilia and extensive archival footage – of Cave’s first three decades as frontman to the world’s most revered and significant bands: The Bad Seeds. “Lovely Creatures” is compiled by Cave and founding Bad Seeds member Mick Harvey, with additional help from the current Bad Seeds. On the announcement of its release, Cave issued the following statement via his website:

“There are some people out there who just don’t know where to start with The Bad Seeds. Others know the catalogue better than I do! This release is designed to be a way into three decades of music making. That’s a lot of songs. The songs we have chosen are the ones that have stuck around, for whatever reason. Some songs are those that demand to be played live. Others are lesser songs that are personal favourites of ours. Others are just too big and have too much history to leave out. And there are those that didn’t make it, poor things. They are the ones you must discover by yourselves.”

“World Spirituality Classics 1: The Ecstatic Music of Alice Coltrane Turiyasangitananda” is the spellbinding compilation of music made by the legendary composer, pianist and spiritualist Alice Coltrane with members of Sai Anantam Ashram in California during the eighties ad nineties. Much of the music here is culled from self-released tape cassettes released from the period. As Luaka Bop have said, the music from “Turiyasangitananda” is “inspired by the gospel music of the Detroit churches she grew up in, mixed together with the Indian devotional music of her religious practice, and even finds Alice singing for the first time in her recorded catalog. Originally only made available through her ashram, they are her most obscure body of work and possibly the greatest reflection of her soul.”

May’s mixtape also features new releases from: A Hawk And A Hacksaw’s Heather Trost who releases her sublime solo debut “Agistri” on June 2nd via LM Duplication; Animal Collective’s “The Painters” EP (Domino); Stockholm-based electronic duo Roll The Dice’s “Born To Ruin” (The New Black); “Wade In” by Julianna Barwick (part of the extensive “Our First 100 Days” benefit compilation); Wolfgang Voigt releases “Narkopop” via Kompakt, his latest ambient opus under his GAS guise and first for twenty years; Heather Woods Broderick’s gorgeous new 7″ single “Home Winds” (recorded in response to the photographs of Benjamin Swett and published as a collaborative project between both artists by Planthouse Inc).

Fractured Air x Blogothèque – S01E12 | December mix

Welcome to our final mixtape for 2016.

For our last mix we are really excited to share an exclusive first listen of the forthcoming album by Finland’s The Gentleman Losers. Based in Helsinki, The Gentleman Losers comprise the brothers Samu and Ville Kuukka. The duo have released their music on such independent labels as Büro, City Centre Offices, Warp, Nothings66 and Standard Form. Their two full-length releases – 2006’s self-titled debut album and 2009’s sophomore “Dustland” – have been universally acclaimed, winning the hearts of many esteemed music-lovers worldwide, while also being championed by such independent music stalwarts as Germany’s Nils Frahm and UK’s Bibio. The forthcoming third record – the brothers’ latest venture into blissful instrumental music of unknown pleasures – is set to be released during 2017.

December’s mix also features our favourite album of the year: “Upstepping” by UK cellist and composer Oliver Coates. As well as releasing his second solo album earlier this year (via PRAH Recordings) Coates has also released the sublime collaborative work “Remain Calm” (with Mica Levi of Micachu & The Shapes) via the UK label Slip Discs. In addition to a busy schedule of extensive touring and live performances during the year, Coates also performed strings on the current Radiohead album “A Moon Shaped Pool” (XL Recordings).

Other 2016 favourites are featured here, including: Brigid Mae Power (self-titled LP via Tompkins Square), Carla dal Forno (“You Know What It’s Like” via Blackest Ever Black), Kevin Morby (“Singing Saw” via Dead Oceans), Jessy Lanza’s “Oh No” (Hyperdub), Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith’s “EARS” (Western Vinyl), Amiina’s “Fantômas” (Mengi) and Eluvium’s “False Readings On” (Temporary Residence).

In a year that has all too often thrown up troubling and distressing news and events, it places an even brighter spotlight on the vital role – in expressing emotions, articulating thoughts, distilling messages, blurring boundaries and lighting the way – that music brings to all our lives. In our tiny capacity, we’d like to thank all the musicians, labels and listeners for helping to keep that eternal light flickering.

Wishing our readers and listeners a very happy Christmas and peaceful new year.

Fractured Air x Blogothèque – S1E7 | July mix

fracturedairmix_july16

July 2016 opened with world-renowned German composer Nils Frahm’s magnificent “Possibly Colliding” weekend of music at the Barbican Centre, London. Curated by Frahm, the special lineup featured live performance, conversation and film screenings where the headline act was Frahm’s monumental sold-out Barbican show, comprising his “most ambitious concert to date.”

Possibly Colliding felt not only like a celebration of the visionary artist’s cherished songbook (thus far) but rather a distillation of the most ground-breaking moments of today’s contemporary music scene. The angelic, hushed solo piano pieces were interwoven with the sprawling and sublime synthesizer-led pieces and many live collaborations – cellist Anne Müller, Nonkeen (with the addition of gifted drummer Andrea Belfi), London-based vocal ensemble Shards, and the André de Ridder-led stargaze ensemble – rendered new versions of Frahm’s towering body of work and offered new insights into the gifted composer’s sonic sphere.

During July we were delighted to be invited to participate in Irish actor Cillian Murphy’s curated IMMA Summer Party happening at the grounds of the Irish Museum of Modern Art at the Royal Hospital Kilmainham, Dublin. Murphy’s music lineup featured performances by celebrated German composer and pianist Hauschka, gifted Irish fiddle player and composer Caoimhín Ó Raghallaigh and Irish-based indie band Meltybrains? Some selections from our DJ set appear in this month’s mixtape.

Limerick-born and London-based composer Áine O’Dwyer has long been one of our most cherished and favourite contemporary musicians. O’Dwyer has released records on such independent labels as: Mie Music, Second language and Fort Evil Fruit, while her versatile talents are evident in her rich and varied recorded output to date, which have featured: live recordings for pipe organ, music for harp and voice and music for solo piano.

This year’s Le Guess Who? festival features special guest curators – including the inimitable L.A. songwriter Julia Holter – who has invited Áine O’Dwyer to this year’s lineup in Utrecht which takes place on 10–13 November 2016.

Fractured Air x Blogothèque – S1E5 | May mix

fracturedairmix_may16

For May’s mixtape we are delighted to present a pair of exclusive tracks by two of Ireland’s finest songwriters: Adrian Crowley and Katie Kim.

Since his debut release at the turn of the century (“A Strange Kind”), Adrian Crowley has quietly established himself as one of the finest songwriters of his generation. With seven studio albums to date (Crowley’s most recent record is “Some Blue Morning”, released in 2014 via Glasgow-based label Chemikal Underground) Crowley’s reputation has been built upon his poetic lyricism, distinctive baritone and a natural gift for storytelling. Presented here exclusively for this mix is Adrian Crowley’s haunting cover version of U.S. folk legend Jackson C. Frank’s “Milk And Honey”.

While the Buffalo-born musician Jackson Carey Frank only released the one album during his lifetime (his Paul Simon-produced self-titled debut from 1965) Frank’s reputation has steadily grown in recent times, in no small part due to Ba Da Bing’s release of “The Complete Recordings” (2015) and the 10″ vinyl issue of “Forest Of Eden” (Secret Records, 2013), a collection of previously unreleased tracks and demos.

We’re equally thrilled to present an exclusive track by another of Ireland’s best-loved and consistently intriguing songwriters, Katie Kim (the pseudonym for Waterford-born Katie Sullivan). With two full-length albums to date (2008’s “Twelve” and 2012’s double LP “Cover&Flood”) a third LP, entitled “Salt”, is scheduled for release later in 2016. Katie Kim has supported the likes of Low and Slint to date while her diverse influences stem from the realms of experimental, folk, post-rock, shoegaze, ambient and outsider folk.

Also presented in May’s mixtape is a number of long-established cornerstones to the independent music scene who have debut records for their latest projects: Four-piece Liima features Efterklang’s Mads Brauer, Casper Clausen and Rasmus Stolberg who are joined by Finnish percussionist Tatu Rönkkö. The band’s 4AD debut is entitled “ii”.
Dieterich & Barnes is the new collaboration between Jeremy Barnes (A Hawk And A Hacksaw, Neutral Milk Hotel) and Deerhoof’s John Dieterich who released their scintillating debut “The Coral Casino” on LM Duplication earlier this year.
“You + Your D.Metal Friend” is the latest improvisational project from Cico Beck (Joasihno, Aloa Input, the Notwist) and Markus Acher (the Notwist, Tied & Tickled Trio, Rayon). The duo’s debut album “Sonnier” is available via the forever-dependable German independent label Alien Transistor.

Fractured Air 39: Call Across Rooms (A Mixtape by Julianna Barwick)

with one comment

The Brooklyn-based composer Julianna Barwick has firmly established herself as truly one of the most wholly unique artists making music today. Barwick has released three LPs to date: ‘Sanguine’, her 2006 self-released debut full length; ‘The Magic Place’ (Asthmatic Kitty, 2011) and ‘Nepenthe’ (Dead Oceans, 2013). Barwick has also recorded as a duo (alongside fellow Asthmatic Kitty artist Helado Negro) under the OMBRE guise; the stunning collaboration has thus far resulted in debut LP ‘Believe You Me’ (Asthmatic Kitty, 2012). Born in Louisianna and raised in Missouri, Barwick’s love for music stemmed from her participation in school choirs during her formative years. Current LP ‘Nepenthe’ (in Greek literature ‘nepenthe’ was a magic drug to wipe out grief and sorrow) was recorded in Reykjavík and features contributions from some of Iceland’s most treasured artists (Amiina, múm guitarist Robert Reynisson and producer Alex Somers).
