June’s mixtape features a first listen of “Golden Plover”, Glasgow’s finest Trembling Bells’ stunning cover of the Bert Jansch song taken from his 1979 avian-themed classic “Avocet”. The track is part of the special 4-track EP “Avocet Revisited”, commissioned and issued by Fire Records’ imprint Earth Recordings, featuring: Trembling Bells; Edwyn Collins and Carwyn Ellis; Modern Studies; Alasdair Roberts.
On “Golden Plover”, Trembling Bells are joined by Callum Calderwood (violin), Rory Haye (vocals), Andrew Pattie (vocals) and Belle & Sebastian’s Stevie Jackson (12 string guitar). “Avocet Revisited” will be released by Earth Recordings on the 11th of August 2017.

One of the UK’s finest indie bands The Clientele return with “Music for the Age of Miracles” (Merge Records) this Autumn, their first new album in seven years. Thus far the irresistible lead single “Lunar Days” has been unveiled, finding the beloved Alasdair MacLean-led band in typically impeccable form, effortlessly fusing a myriad of influences into miniature pop marvels like only they can.

June’s mixtape also features new releases from: Ariel Pink’s new single “Another Weekend”, from the hugely anticipated forthcoming Mexican Summer album “Dedicated to Bobby Jameson”; Grizzly Bear’s “Painted Ruins”, one of 2017’s most eagerly anticipated albums and follow-up to 2012’s sonic marvel “Shields”; Renowned Irish contemporary classical collective Crash Ensemble release their glorious “Ghosts” album – featuring compositions written by Nico Muhly, Donnacha Dennehy and Valgeir Sigurðsson – which is released via Icelandic independent Bedroom Community.

We’re delighted to present an exclusive unreleased track by U.S. composer and songwriter Peter Broderick (Bella Union, Erased Tapes) in April’s mixtape. For well over a decade now, the world-renowned Portland Oregon-born artist has been to the forefront of the thriving independent music scene, amassing a considerable body of work across a multitude of labels and platforms in the process. While originally a member of both Efterklang and Horse Feathers, Broderick’s reputation as a gifted solo composer would be heralded by the release of both folk-based “Home” (Bella Union) and the piano-based “Float” (Type) in 2008. Since then, Broderick has released a plethora of records for labels such as Erased Tapes and Bella Union, highlights including: 2009’s “Music For Falling From Trees”, 2011’s “Music For Confluence”, 2012’s “These Walls Of Mine” and 2015’s “Colours Of The Night” albums. Collaboration has also been of vital importance to Broderick’s artistic output to date. Duos have been formed with U.K.’S Greg Haines (Greg Gives Peter Space) and France’s Félicia Atkinson (La Nuit) while other collaborations have featured: Nils Frahm, Machinefabriek, Gabriel Solomon, Heather Woods Broderick and The Beacon Sound Choir. In recent years, Broderick has produced, recorded, and guested on many musicians’ works from his home-based studio, “The Sparkle” (Corrina Repp, Brumes, David Allred).
Here is how Peter describes his track, “Boom”:

“It’s a thing I call Boom, and it’s basically just some effected casio loops with live drums over the top… I’ve enjoyed listening to it several times and don’t really have any plans to do anything with it.”

Also appearing on April’s mixtape is Irish composer and pianist Conor Walsh. Born in County Mayo, Conor Walsh released his debut E.P. (“The Front”, via Ensemble Music) last year to widespread critical acclaim. Despite it being Walsh’s debut recorded release, Walsh was a firmly established artist who had toured regularly across Ireland and additionally composed for both film and television to date. It was with such great sadness to learn of Conor’s sudden and untimely death in March. We’d both like to take this opportunity to dedicate this month’s mixtape to the memory of Conor Walsh, such an inspiring and beautiful composer and person who has touched many people’s lives with his music.

Chantal Acda ‘Let Your Hands Be My Guide’ (Gizeh)
Dutch-born songwriter Chantal Acda will release the gorgeous ‘Let Your Hands Be My Guide’ this November on Gizeh Records. The Belgium-based artist has formerly recorded under the Sleepingdog moniker, making three critically acclaimed albums culminating with 2010’s ‘With Our Heads in the Clouds and Our Hearts in the Fields’, a collaboration between Acda and Adam Wiltzie (Stars of the Lid, A Winged Victory For The Sullen). ‘Let Your Hands Be My Guide’ is effectively Acda’s first solo album, and features the sublime talents of Nils Frahm (Erased Tapes), Peter Broderick (Erased Tapes, Type, Bella Union), Múm’s cellist Gyda Valtysdottir and Shahzad Ismaily. With Frahm on production duties, Acda’s songs are kept beautifully vulnerable, yet maintain a certain magical spark throughout, reminiscent of ‘Wonders’, Frahm’s beautifully understated collaborative EP with Peter Broderick. ‘Let Your Hands Be My Guide’ is out on November 11th 2013 on Gizeh Records.

Clark ‘Feast/Beast’ (Warp)
Few artists can boast such an impressive array of genuinely inspiring remix work than Warp’s Chris Clark. The English electronic musician has remixed a myriad of various artists over recent years – including Bibio, Nathan Fake, Amon Tobin, Massive Attack, Battles and Letherette – and this substantial body of work is now beautifully collected by Warp in a double-album for the first time. Whereas first half “Feast” comprises the more melodic and shape-shifting material (typified by Clark’s stunning remix of Nils Frahm’s ‘Peter’), the second half set of “Beast” comprises the more hardcore and techno material. Also features exclusive original remixes by Bibio and Nathan Fake.

Agnes Obel ‘Aventine’ (PIAS)
The much-anticipated arrival of Danish composer Agnes Obel’s follow-up to the internationally-acclaimed debut ‘Philarmonics’ comes in the form of the glorious ‘Aventine’. The album is officially released on 30th September and is currently streaming in full here. Currently based in Berlin, Obel will make her eagerly-awaited live return this October on her European tour which features appearances at London’s Union Chapel and Dublin’s Vicar Street. (All tour dates here). ‘Aventine’ is an utterly compelling, hauntingly beautiful set of songs that confirms Obel as one of the most impressive young musical artists making music.

The Dale Cooper Quartet & The Dictaphones ‘Quatorze Pièces De Menace’ (Denovali)
Named after David Lynch’s lead detective in cult TV series “Twin Peaks”, Dale Cooper & The Dictaphones are the cult French Dark Jazz collective whose fusion of 50’s Jazz, dark ambience and ghostly sound recordings provides for an unforgettable listening experience. Recorded in Brest in Britanny, France, ‘Quatorze Pièces De Menace’ is released on Denovali, Berlin’s wonderful experimental label. The album features an inspired set of guest vocalists including New Zealand’s Alicia Merz (Birds Of Passage), Ronan Mac Erlaine and Gaëlle Kerrien (Yann Tiersen).

V/A ‘Music and Migration III’ (Second Language)
‘Music & Migration III’ is the final installment of the Music & Migration series which “congratulates BirdLife International on their 20th Anniversary and particularly celebrates their important global work for migratory birds.” Featured here are thirteen tracks compiled specifically for the series for London-based independent label Second Language. Standout moments include the charming and graceful compositions by ISAN, Colleen, Mark Fry and Glen Johnson. Also included with M&MIII is a free bonus disc, Mizieb EP, by The Home Current which features remixes by a number of artists including The Boats.

V/A ‘Live At Caffè Lena : Music From America’s Legendary Coffeehouse, 1967-2013’ (Tompkins Square)
San Francisco’s Tompkins Square have been quietly releasing some of the most breathtaking music – both new material and lovingly assembled gems from the past – over the past decade or so. Perhaps what typifies the heartbeat of the label is this latest gem; a triple album featuring a poignant chronicle of New York’s Caffè Lena, the oldest continuously operating folk music coffeehouse in the US. As stated by the lovingly written sleeve notes, the heartbeat of the set – amidst the array of stars such as Kate McGarrigle, Rick Danko, Pete and Mike Seeger – is Lena Spencer herself: “She would graciously house wayward artists, sometimes for months at a time. But she was not merely a host. She championed artists, from Bob Dylan as early as 1961 all the way through the 80s until her passing. Her passion for identifying and promoting talent is evident throughout this 3-CD set. That Caffè Lena is still open for business tonight is a testament to her legacy.” Essential. Grizzly Bear ‘Shields: Expanded’ (Warp)
Indie greats Grizzly Bear re-release their wonderful ‘Shields’ album this November in a newly expanded edition. While such quick re-releases are generally fairly shallow affairs and often prove nothing more than blatant marketing exercises, this double-album features exclusive ‘Shields’ sessions, demos, and remixes (highlights being Lindstrom’s reinterpretation of ‘Gun-Shy’ and Nicolas Jaar’s re-working of ‘Sleeping Ute’). Double-album ‘Shields: Expanded’ will be available on Warp on November 12th.

CocoRosie ‘Tales of a GrassWidow’ (City Slang)
This year saw the much-anticipated return of sisters Sierra and Bianca Casady, who have been making some of the most vibrant and compelling music of the last decade since their stunning debut ‘La Maison de Mon Rêve’ back in 2004. Current album ‘Tales of a GrassWidow’ (City Slang) was produced in collaboration with Icelandic composer Valgeir Sigurðsson (Bedroom Community) who gives the songs a lush and cinematic feel, while Antony Hegarty (Antony & The Johnsons) features on guest vocals. As always, the American sisters don’t shy away from the big topics, subjects here include child abuse, the mistreatment of children, and the destruction of the natural environment. CocoRosie make their eagerly-awaited return to Irish shores when they perform at The Button Factory, Dublin on Wednesday October 2nd.

Nils Frahm ‘Spaces’ (Erased Tapes)
Since the upload of the ‘Spaces’ official album trailer a couple months back – and, indeed, since the release of his previous album ‘Screws’ last year on Erased Tapes – Frahm has been prolific as ever. As well as performing live across Europe and America, Frahm has also found the time to collaborate on a number of albums (as performer and producer) including Sarah Neufeld’s wonderful ‘Hero Brother’ (Constellation) and Chantal Acda’s ‘Let Your Hands Be My Guide’ (Gizeh). ‘Spaces’ is mastered by the gifted Mandy Parnell and will be released on November 18 on Erased Tapes. It will be the first release under the new Erased Tapes America imprint, out November 19 in North America, preceded by a string of West Coast shows in late September and celebrated with a special album release concert in New York City on November 25. American dates feature guests including Hauschka, Peter Broderick and Ólafur Arnalds.

Sidi Touré ‘Alafia’ (Thrill Jockey)
Malian songwriter and guitarist Sidi Touré returns this September with the wonderful ‘Alafia’, an album Touré recorded in Nantes, France and Bamako, Mali. It’s Touré’s third for Chicago’s Thrill Jockey label and comprises his most complete and fully-realized album yet. Comparisons to the pioneering output of fellow Malian and predecessor Ali Farka Touré can still be made, where the blues-influenced guitar playing and plaintive vocal melisma of Songhaï folk music can be heard throughout. As stated by Thrill Jockey: “Touré deals with the strife and political instability plaguing his home region using the effortlessly broad musical language he’s internalized since his youth. Regional styles, including takamba, holley, and abarbarba (the butcher’s dance), along with his longtime interest in international music, form the underpinning to Touré’s lyrical ode to his country.”

Interview with Nico Muhly.

The gifted composer, arranger and conductor, Nico Muhly discusses the new album ‘Drones’, the Bedroom Community family, his arrangement work for Grizzly Bear and the effect the Juilliard School for Composition had on his own compositions.

Earlier in November saw the release of Nico Muhly’s three-part ‘Drones’ album, in collaboration with pianist Bruce Brubaker, violinist Pekka Kuusisto, and violist Nadia Sirota. As ever, some of the most compelling sounds of cinematic wonder are unleashed by the awe-inspiring Bedroom Community label. ‘Drones’ consists of the Nico Muhly three E.P’s ‘Drones & Piano’, ‘Drones & Viola’ and ‘Drones & Violin’. Drones was recorded and produced by Valgeir Sigurðsson in the Greenhouse Studios in Iceland. The artist-run label headed by Icelandic musician Sigurðsson was inaugurated in 2007 with the release of Muhly’s first album ‘Speaks In Volumes’. Since then, Muhly has been highly prolific in his vast amount of works encompassing his peerless roles as arranger, composer, performer and conductor. My favourite Muhly album must be ‘I Drink The Air Before Me’, a score for Stephen Petronio’s dance piece of the same name. It is simply modern classical music at its beautiful best. Muhly is central to many songs of one of my favourite bands, that is Brooklyn’s Grizzly Bear. His string arrangements for their modern indie gems is a pure joy to savor. Other artists Muhly has collaborated with are Bonnie “Prince” Billy, Jónsi of Sigur Rós and Antony and the Johnsons amongst many others.

It is a real pleasure to ask you some questions about your music. I am a huge fan of your solo work and the multitude of collaborations you have done up to now; from Grizzly Bear to Philip Glass, and ‘I Drink The Air Before Me’ to ‘Drones’. Congratulations on your hugely compelling and innovative works to date. 

Tell me please about ‘Drones’. You have said how “we surround ourselves with constant noise, and the Drones pieces are an attempt to honour these drones and stylize them.” Explain please how you honoured and stylized these drones through the varied compositions.

Ha, you have a funny way of wording things! There is a built-in vagueness to the words “honor” and “stylize” (in addition to an aggressive American spelling!) which, I think, befits any writing about music.  That having been said, if you want me to get really specific, I was thinking about how every space has a built-in drone. Houses have them, in the city and the country; empty train stations have them, airports have them. For me, a vacuum cleaner is a wonderful musical prompt; it kind of says: I dare you to put something on top of this sound. Imagine sitting in an airplane at night: nobody’s making noise, but the engine is making its own song.  So these drone pieces are an attempt to take a constant noise/sound environment and make music that can only exist in opposition to it.  Sometimes it rubs quite strongly – the drones and violin piece in particular – and other times the “style” of it is relatively close to the drone, if that makes sense.

Discuss please the wonderful collaborations you do with your like-minded labelmates in the Bedroom Community collective and Greenhouse Studios, Iceland. How does this beautiful work environment affect your development as a composer?

One of the fun things about Bedroom Community is that we all make such different music.  There isn’t a kind of stylistic manifesto about the place, so the resulting collaborations are more a result of genuine friendship and curiosity.  It’s been interesting to watch – I’m much more comfortable now working in an electronic medium, and I just got an email that Valgeir signed to a very August and Respectable publisher! We’re all slowly blurring our itineraries closer to one another; Ben Frost is making musical-theater works and Sam Amidon is writing books and it’s all become quite jumbled up, in the way of a family.

You are a graduate of the Juilliard School for Composition. I would love to learn more about this and particularly, your final year thesis? (if you don’t mind!)

Anything in particular you’d like to know?  Juilliard is a great place.  There is a sort of equalizing effect it has on musicians who have all achieved a very high level of SOMETHING, but who require some molding to become great musicians, if that makes sense. We all kind of sacrificed our childhoods on the pyre of music, and the school helps make something out of the embers.  There isn’t really a thesis situation there but the expectation is, usually, that you’ll write some orchestra music, which I did: a fourteen-minute weird thing based on pulses in different tempi happening on top of each other, and then another piece all to do with Pentecost and the music of Thomas Tallis.  In a sense, those two pieces established the groundwork for everything I’ve done since then.

My favourite release of yours is ‘I Drink The Air Before Me’, a score for Stephen Petronio’s dance piece of the same name. I was interested in reading how you wanted the music to relate to the weather:-storms, anxiety and coastal living. Please give me an insight into the process involved in achieving these aims?

Thank you for your kind words!  With this piece, basically, Stephen and I wrote down all the different sections. I imagined in my head a small town preparing for a storm – people running around doing last-minute errands, taping up the windows, etc.  There is a certain anxiety about it.  Then when the actual thing happens, it’s rather ecstatic, isn’t it?  And boring.  There’s a sense that you’re indoors or outdoors but there’s this aggressive monotony.  So the whole piece builds up to this ninth section (I think it is) that is the center of the storm and it’s basically four on the floor (or actually five on the floor) for six minutes.  Everything else is anxious vignettes.

I love the arrangements you have done for Grizzly Bear. Can you talk through the songs you have worked on and if there is a particular song you’re most proud of upon the song’s completion?

Talk through all of the songs!?  There are a lot!  I am particularly happy with Cheerleader, but really, that album Veckatimest as a whole was great for me because we really made it in layers.  It wasn’t like I came in at the end and just put strings on everything; the idea was that it would sort of organically come out of the songs and then get processed again.  One of the interesting things about that band in particular is the way they saturate most of the registers with just the four of them – they have intricate, “composed” activity in the bass, the middle, the vocal, the treble, the rhythm.  So there isn’t a ton of ROOM to do intricate arrangements; it’s really more a process of finding blank space and weaving something in and around what’s already there.

‘A Scream and an Outrage-A marathon weekend of new music curated by Nico Muhly’ happens next year. What can audiences expect for the London Barbican shows planned next May?

Ha that is my all-time least favorite question.  Audiences should never expect anything more when they leave the house than to have a good time.  That’s the sort of governing philosophy of my life.  What should I say, that we’re going to have elephants and stripper-poles and a chorus of pygmies?  It will be a weekend of good music, performed well!  Everybody should come!
