First Listen: “Never, just as you wanted” by Benoît Pioulard

leave a comment »

We are delighted to premiere an exclusive new track by world-renowned Seattle-based ambient artist Benoît Pioulard. The divine ambient exploration “Never, just as you wanted” is taken from Thomas Meluch’s forthcoming album ‘Slow spark, soft spoke’ due out on 17th November via Ghent-based independent label Dauw.

Benoît Pioulard - Slow spark, soft spoke (artwork)

Shortly after releasing his highly acclaimed ‘The Benoît Pioulard Listening Matter’, Pioulard left on tour to Europe in order to promote the album. This tour took him to several distinctive places ranging from urban Brussels and Cork, Ireland to rural France and the mystic capital city of Iceland, Reykjavik.

Once returned to Seattle, these new impressions and memories formed the inspiration to make ‘Slow spark, soft spoke’. Not surprisingly, the album continues in the same vein as his tour cd ‘Lignin Poise’ – which was recently repressed on vinyl by Portland’s Beacon Sound -and is characterized by slowly moving lo-fi ambient.

Slow spark, soft spoke’ will be released on November 17th on Belgian based label Dauw on limited edition tape (first edition of 150 handmade copies) and digitally. The tape comes with original hand-printed artwork by Femke Strijbol and will be accompanied by a dried flower and a unique signed polaroid taken by Meluch himself.

‘Slow spark, soft spoke’ will be released on November 17th on limited edition tape and digital via Belgian label Dauw.

Never, just as you wanted” is the first track off the eagerly awaited forthcoming Benoît Pioulard studio album. ‘Slow spark, soft spoke’ will be released on November 17th on limited edition tape and digital via Dauw.

Never, just as you wanted” is a timeless odyssey of complete transcendence with gradual bliss of guitar tones – and meticulously crafted sounds – that somehow map the ocean swell of human emotions – of the innermost kind – embedded deep within us all. This formidable tour-de-force could be a sister companion to the Beacon Sound-released vinyl ‘Lignin Poise’ as Meluch continues to develop and evolve his utterly unique lo-fi ambient sound worlds.

Dauw is a Ghent based label which primary aim is to combine music with the graphic work of Femke Strijbol. The labels’ current focus is on ambient and electro-acoustic music with a profound love for the more minimal side of both styles. After meeting Pioulard during a concert as part of their Living Riving Concert series (other concerts including Peter Broderick, Will Samson, Machinefabriek, David Allred, Gareth Dickson…), Dauw now presents the new studio album of Benoît Pioulard which marks their 25th release in almost 4 years of existence.

‘Slow spark, soft spoke’ will be released on November 17th on limited edition tape and digital via Belgian label Dauw.

First Listen: ‘Crystal Palace’ by Fadi Tabbal

with one comment

We are delighted to premiere ‘Crystal Palace’ by renowned Lebanese artist Fadi Tabbal, taken from the forthcoming full-length release ‘Museum of Disappearing Buildings’ co-released by Portland’s Beacon Sound and Lebanese label Ruptured.

BNSD023_cover.jpg

The prestigious Portland-based label Beacon Sound are co-releasing an album by Beirut artist Fadi Tabbal on 6th October 2017 with Lebanese label Ruptured. The Lebanese musician, producer and sound engineer Fadi Tabbal’s work consists of guitar-based drone soundscapes fused with utterly transcendent ambient flourishes. ‘Crystal Palace’ is the sublime closing piece to Tabbal’s newest solo release (which is limited to 300 vinyl copies).

Fadi has been central to the Beirut music scene for the last decade, running Tunefork Studios and playing in multiple groups. Museum Of Disappearing Buildings is his second solo album and first release to appear on vinyl. It is an album of ambient guitar drones and grainy electronics that reflects the precarious political and social environment of Beirut while also being inspired by the impossible structures of Russian paper architects Brodsky and Utkin. He is featured in the book Local Music Scenes and Globalization: Transnational Platforms in Beirut by Thomas Burkhalter (Routledge; 2013), which advocates against Euro-American centrism in the realm of music in favor of a ‘multi-sited global avant garde’. This is the first collaboration between Beacon Sound (Portland) and Ruptured (Beirut).

Fadi will also perform live with fellow Beirut musician Munma in Berlin on November 4th 2017 at the 3rd iteration of A Happening, co-curated by Beacon Sound.

The Portland-based label have released a diverse range of internationally-renowned artists: Terry Riley, Colleen, Peter Broderick, Johann Johannsson, Lucrecia Dalt, Gareth Dickson and many more. Forthcoming releases include upcoming albums by Benoit Pioulard and Lau Nau, as well as a repress of minimalist-piano classic The Book Of Sounds by German composer Hans Otte.

‘Museum of Disappearing Buildings’ is out on 6th October 2017 via Beacon Sound and Ruptured (Pre-order HERE).

Fractured Air x Blogothèque – S02E08 | August mix

with one comment

fracturedair_august17.jpg

August’s mixtape features a pair of tracks from This Is How We Fly’s eagerly-anticipated second album “Foreign Fields”, due for release on 15th September 2017. The four-piece comprise the renowned musicians: Petter Berndalen (drums), Nic Gareiss (percussive dance), Seán Mac Erlaine (clarinets, electronics) and Caoimhín Ó Raghallaigh (hardanger d’amore fiddles). Hailing from Ireland, Sweden and USA, the quartet draw upon a rich tapestry of sounds and traditions, drawing upon the raw energy and rich dynamism of jazz and its true spirit of improvisation, together with traditional music’s eternal affinity and appreciation for honing and perfecting one’s craft. “Foreign Fields” is a joy to behold, its soul-stirring music navigates new sonic terrain while continually pushing its four composers to reach for new heights, forever onwards and upwards for this most inventive and mythical of bands.

UK producer James Holden’s “The Inheritors” (Border Community, 2013) was one of this century’s finest records, an album for modern times created by one of the most consistently innovative and singular artists making music today. With the announcement that it’s long-awaited follow-up, “The Animal Spirits” (due for release on 3rd November once again via Holden’s own Border Community label), it is bound to rise to the surface on many an end-of-year lists come December. The album (described as “synth-led folk-trance standards”) features Holden’s newly assembled group of “fellow travellers”, James Holden & The Animal Spirits. The personnel comprises long-time collaborators Tom Page and Etienne Jaumet, as well as Marcus Hamblett, Liza Bec and Lascelle Gordon. The album’s lead single, “Pass Through The Fire” has so far been unveiled, the track having been inspired by his 2014 trip to Morocco to work with late Gnawa music legend Maalem Mahmoud Guinia. James Holden was also recently added to the special guest curatorial program at this November’s Le Guess Who? Festival at Utrecht, where he has invited such stellar musicians as Serbia’s Mario Batkovic and Canada’s Jerusalem In My Heart to his lineup.

August’s mix also features new releases from: Julie Byrne’s “Not Even Happiness” (Basin Rock); Four Tet’s latest essential single for his Text imprint, “Planet”; Grouper’s new track “Children” (taken from her “Ruins” album sessions); Rafael Anton Irisarri’s mesmerising “The Shameless Years” (Umor Rex) and Hype Williams“Rainbow Edition” (Big Dada Recordings).

fracturedair_feb17

We’re excited to present three exclusive tracks for February’s mixtape.

February’s edition features an exclusive first listen of UK-based organist and composer James McVinnie’s “Cycles_1” album, set for release this Spring via Icelandic independent Bedroom Community. The album is a collection of reworks of McVinnie’s glorious 2013 Bedroom Community album, “Cycles”, an album featuring thirteen organ pieces performed by Mcvinnie, written by Nico Muhly and also featuring contributions from Nadia Sirota, Chris Thompson and Simon Wall. Presented here is the rework of “O Emmanuel” (the final of the “Seven O Antiphon Preludes” from “Cycles”) by composer Paul Evans, who is also the producer and engineer at the legendary Greenhouse Studios; the creative home of Bedroom Community, founded by Valgeir Sigurðsson in 1997.

Also featured on February’s mixtape is an exclusive first listen of Irish songwriter Brigid Mae Power’s hauntingly beautiful cover of Planxty’s “As I Roved Out” (a regular inclusion on Power’s enthralling live shows), taken from her forthcoming “The Ones You Keep Close” EP, comprising a collection of older songs of Power’s newly recorded by Peter Broderick at his Woods, Oregon-based studio The Sparkle during 2016. The stunning six-track vinyl EP will be available this April via German independent label Oscarson.

We’re happy to also feature the exclusive track “Rook” by Seattle-based artist Benoît Pioulard (Kranky, Ghostly International, Morr Music) which will be exclusively made available on a tour-only CD during his forthcoming eagerly-awaited European tour, commencing on 4th March 2017.

Benoît Pioulard (USA/Kranky)

Listening Matter’ is the sixth Kranky album by Thomas Meluch under his musical alias Benoît Pioulard, following the 2006 debut full-length ‘Précis’, ‘Temper’ (2008), ‘Lasted’ (2010), 2013’s ‘Hymnal’ and ‘Sonnet’ (2015). The American sound sculptor – in a similar fashion to his label-mates Loscil, Grouper and Pan American – has amassed a rich body of empowering work, seamlessly creating some of the most affecting and captivating ambient-based compositions of the past decade.

In addition to Meluch’s universally praised solo work, collaborative projects include Perils-duo with Kyle Bobby Dunn (whose debut LP was issued by Desire Path Recordings) and Orcas- alongside The Sight Below’s Rafael Anton Irisarri released on Morr Music.

The Seattle-based composer and songwriter has continually forged utterly captivating folk-infused-ambient song cycles that are rooted in the examination of the self, of questioning of the universe and reconciling the two.

Praise for ‘The Benoit Pioulard Listening Matter’:

“Utterly perfect warmhearted lo-fi pop.”

Norman Records

“8/10 — A baker’s dozen of future-past pop songs etched onto water-warped tape… Euphoric.”
PopMatters

“Imbued with a sense of how fleeting life can be… Meluch’s words are sharp as ever,
evoking worlds of meaning in quick turns of phrase.”
