Mixtape: Fractured Air – “Everything Unfolds” – September 2018
Our September mix opens with the utterly captivating new single “I Shall Love 2” from the peerless Los Angeles-based composer and songwriter Julia Holter. “That is all, that is all / There is nothing else” softly whispers Holter, beneath hushed silence before a cinematic synth back drop melds effortlessly with her majestic harmonies. The shape-shifting ballad continually builds with intricate layers of strings, percussion and double bass, forming a wholly shape shifting song cycle of stunning beauty. Her latest sonic creation journeys through astral planes – filled with hope and undying strength – in a search for inner peace and purpose amidst a world of chaos. “I Shall Love 2” somehow encapsulates one’s dreams inside one pulsating, vital heartbeat. The gifted composer’s fifth studio album ‘Aviary’ is released via Domino on 25th October 2018 alongside a European and U.S. tour.
Elsewhere, September’s mixtape features new releases from: legendary Minnesota trio Low; techno bliss courtesy of Djrum (R&S Records); Brendon Anderegg’s solo synthesizer explorations (Thrill Jockey’s “June” LP); the beautifully compiled Ivor Raymonde retrospective “Paradise – The Sound of Ivor Raymonde” (including his timeless arrangements for The Walker Brothers, Bill Fury, Dusty Springfield and many more); more essential re-issues via the Belgian imprint Stroom (Patrick Sellinger’s new wave/electronic opus “Businessmen” marking the label’s latest release); Carrie Cleveland’s soul treasure “Looking Up” LP (in a glorious expanded edition via London’s Kalita Records) and a gorgeous document of Sudan’s rich musical heritage on Ostinato’s new release “Two Niles To Sing A Melody: The Violins & Synths of Sudan”. September’s mixtape also includes new soundtracks from Mogwai’s “KIN” score and the sorely missed Icelandic composer Jóhann Jóhannsson’s “Mandy” original score.

Guest Mixtape: Oliver Coates
Several ground-breaking records from 2016 can be attributed to the gifted talents of British cellist and composer Oliver Coates. The London-based composer’s sophomore full-length release ‘Upstepping’ is undoubtedly one of the year’s most accomplished, innovative and compelling musical journeys with its meticulously crafted and sumptuously layered cello-based compositions that carves out techno-fueled waves of pure bliss and transcendence. ‘Upstepping’ is indeed (in the words of Coates) “pumped-up body music”. In addition to ‘Upstepping’, Coates performed on Radiohead’s latest ‘A Moon Shaped Pool’ LP and most recently, a collaborative work with UK’s Mica Levi (Micachu & The Shapes) in the form of ‘Remain Calm’, another crowning jewel of 2016.
The British composer, producer and arranger is best known for his collaborative work with the London Contemporary Orchestra, Jonny Greenwood (‘The Master’ score) and Mica Levi (score for ‘Under The Skin’). On Coates’ latest solo masterwork ‘Upstepping’, A scintillating record of disparate influences is crafted where vital sounds of electronic and techno collide with neo-classical elements, which somehow feels closely adjacent to the works of Aphex Twin, Four Tet and Boards of Canada as it does to the modern-classical realm of today.
We are delighted to present to you a special guest mix compiled by Oliver Coates. Below is Oliver’s description about this inspired selection of music:
“Here is a panorama: the integration of human voice, real or concocted, as formant synthesis which binds instrumental haze beyond slamming rhythms and does wonders for the physiology. There are versions upon versions – distorted cello play over sequenced dance music is my current activity – where the cello intercedes as human element, using the bow as a Cirklon Sequencer. All the different attacks. Wahs and pointillisms, bulges, swells, sighs. Airs, ahs and pointed teeth. Polyphony like a baby’s mobile, Alexander Calder, hot and cold, monophonic bassline attitude underneath large and diffuse chords.”

Mixtape: Dmitry Evgrafov (RUS/130701)
Later this month sees the eagerly awaited release of Russian pianist & composer Dmitry Evgrafov’s seven-track EP, ‘The Quiet Observation’, which will be released on the prestigious FatCat imprint 130701. To coincide with its release we are delighted to share a special classical-based mixtape that Dmitry Evgrafov has recently made.
Dmitry Evgrafov is a hugely promising and gifted young Russian pianist/composer whose music blends intimate piano with rich strings and electronics, bringing to mind the work of peers such as Goldmund, Carlos Cipa, Poppy Ackroyd or Nils Frahm. Completely self-taught, Dmitry began self-releasing his music at the age of seventeen, and in 2015 signed to FatCat’s 130701 imprint, releasing his label debut, ‘Collage’, last October. A beautifully focused and concise seven-track EP, ‘The Quiet Observation’ follows up that release and precedes a new album due next year.
A striking intimacy and delicate beauty permeates the stratosphere of luminous piano tones and minimal instrumentation of glockenspiel, strings (and two tracks played on a virtual church organ). In the same way as labelmate Resina’s singular cello works, a vivid sense of solitude and quiet bliss pours from the gorgeous modern-classical splendour.

‘The Quiet Observation’ is available on 14th October 2016 via 130701 Records.

“My aim here is to give a listener a new look at the classical music. Whilst much music from that time is boring and excessive but through years my interest was to gather some compositions that are hundreds of years old but that sound really contemporary. For example, there are two compositions from Nikolay Rimsky-Korsakov that were written in the 19th century but sound like a soundtrack for a good 2016 movie. There are also two of my personal reworks of classical compositions by Georges Bizet and Edward Grieg, to make them modern-day in a weird and subtle way. I have included a number of beautiful contributions from XX and XXI century composers including Arvo Part and Daniel Bjarnason as well as the orchestral rendition of Aphex Twin and two pieces from modern Russian composers — Pavel Karmanov and Valery Gavrilin.”
